1. Banjara  

Group – Greyhound

The Banjara people are the largest gypsy group in India, Banjara hound dogs were kept by these Banjara people in North India. 

The Banjara hound, also known as the Vanjari, is considered a general hunting and camp or flock guard dog breed that is indigenous to North India.

This breed considered to be the general hunting breed/ camp breed/ flock guard breed in India, this breed is as speed as the greyhound and the stamina as collie.

2. Bully Kutta 

Group – mastiff dog
Origin – Punjab (India & Pakistan)



Origin: Sindh, Punjab(Pakistan), Central Asia, Europe and Thanjavur (South India)

Colour: predominantly white in colour, but also fawn, brindle, brown, black can also be seen.

Breed Height: 24″-30″ tall (Smaller than Alangu)

Use: Used as a guard dog and fighting dog

3. Chippiparai Hound

Group – Hound
Origin – Chippiparai, in Madurai, Tamil Nadu, India

Chippiparai Dog Bred by royal families in Chippiparai in Virudhunagar district Tamil Nadu, it was kept as a symbol of royalty and dignity mostly in Tirunelveli and Madurai rulers.

The Chippiparai gets its name from the town that it was developed in. 

Origin: Chippiparai in Virudhunagar district Tamil Nadu (South India)

Colour: Fawn, reddish brown, black tinged coat, silver-grey, with very limited or no white markings

Breed Height:25 inches or 63.5 centimetres

Use: Previously It is used for hunting wild boar, deer and hare. Later It is also used for guarding the home.



4. Gaddi Kutta

Group – mastiff
Origin: western Himalayan (Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Kashmir)



This breed developed by Asur King Mahidant of Meerut by crossing the wild dingo-like hounds with the Sha-Khyi variety or fighting line of Tibetan Mastiffs for hunting purposes.

Dingo: Type of wild mastiff pariah breed descended from the massive Hyrcanian dogs

Type: Mastiff

Other Name: Indian Panther Hound, Mahidant Mastiff and Tibetan Mastiff

Height: 30 inches tall

Weight: 100 pounds or more

Use: Initially used for hunting purpose, later widely used by local shepherds

5. Indian Spitz

Group – Spitz
Origin: The Indian Spitz was introduced in India by the British



6. Jonangi

Origin: kolleru region of Andhra Pradesh



7. Kanni

Group: hound dog
Origin: Southern districts of Tamil Nadu



8. Kombai/Combai

Group – Hound
Origin – Kombai, Tamil Nadu, India



9. Mudhol Hound

Group – Hound
Origin – villagers in India’s Deccan Plateau



10. Pandikona 

Group – Hound
Origin – Pattikonda taluk-Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh India.



11. Rajapalayam

Group – Hound
Origin -Rajapalayam in the Virudhunagar district of Tamil Nadu.



12. Rampur Hound

Group – Hound
Origin – Rampur region of Northern India, which lies between Delhi and Bareilly.
